Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) in Penlee Park, Penzance
Just a week or so has made a lot of difference to the leaf cover. The leaves went a lovely golden colour before swooping down to the ground.
The first picture is at the end of November, the second is dated 10th December. The cold winds we have had here have done their work.
Some more sheltered leaves lingered longer. On the ground, the leaf litter is mixed oak and chestnut.
The colour of the chestnut leaves on the ground is – well, a rich chestnut.
Brief interlude for some song lyrics:
“When you knew that it was over you were suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning to the colour of her hair“
From Noel Harrisons’ Windmills of Your Mind from 1969.
If you are too young to know it, here’s a You Tube link:

“The Windmills of Your Mind” is a song with music by French composer Michel Legrand and English lyrics written by Americans Alan and Marilyn Bergman. The French lyrics, under the title “Les Moulins de mon cÅ“ur“, were written by Eddy Marnay.
December is the time to rediscover the beauty in the tracery of winter trees. (And to listen to cheesy songs on YouTube.)
Thanks as ever to Pat for hosting the merry band of Tree Followers.

Lovely tracery; and the contrasting colours of November and December are so well brought out. Lucky there was no snow when you took these!

No snow in Penzance, Victoria. We just got hail, which stayed frozen overnight – it looked like snow though!

Good pictures. It was much the same with the one I’m following, especially the ‘carpet’ of leaves. xx

Carpet is a much better name than “leaf litter”, don’t you think? Keeping the earth warm, not just something thrown away.

Thanks Juliet. The colour is amazing, especially with the sun on it.

I can’t believe I am commenting so late on this. My life is flying by with no time of my own.
Sadly I am old enough to remember the Windmills of My Mind (and MacArthur Park – saae sort of wacky era).
The tree looks lovely but chestnut leaves are so messy – at least I guess they turn to mulch very quickly.
All the best đŸ™‚

MacArthur Park is one of my favourite cheesy songs! (especially “striped pair of pants” to rhyme with “we followed in the dance”)
Thanks for commenting, not late at all, much appreciated.
In January I was mostly hibernating. I haven’t decided on a new tree to follow yet, so am taking a little break. Till proper spring. But I will get around to reading everyone’s posts soon.
Cheers. J
